Event/course summary Talking about a child’s special educational needs or disability with a parent can feel both awkward and daunting.
This course offers practical support to promote positive conversations, establish collaborative relationships and manage conflict and challenge with confidence. By the end of the course participant will have a greater awareness and understanding of key factors which impact upon and shape parental experiences of parenting a disabled child.
Aims This course will:
- Increase understanding of disability.

- Increase awareness of the effect of disability on the family.

- Encourage more effective communication with parents.

- Promote positive and collaborative relationships with parents of children with SEND. 
Learning outcomes - skills and knowledge By the end of the course Participants will be able to:
- Explain how a disability impacts on a child in terms of their learning.

- Illustrate how they will apply the social model of disability to their practice.

- Apply appropriate language and approach parents with confidence.

- Demonstrate how a range of methods and approaches can be used to facilitate positive communication and relationships with parents

Intended impact on practice After the course, it is intended that participants will establish positive relationships with parents of children with SEND by using different methods and approaches to communication and engagement. They will be able to support and advise colleagues in their settings about the best way to approach parents when discussing the needs of the young children who may not have a diagnosis but who have some issues that need to be addressed.
Additional event/course information The start time of 9.15 allows 15 minutes for registration and arrival.

Trainers Ruth Poyser
Information about trainer(s) Ruth is a freelance SEND trainer and consultant with over 20 years experience of working with children and young people and their families with special educational needs and disabilities. Ruth is a qualified social worker and has worked in both operational and strategic roles for a number of London Local Authorities on the implementation of Aiming High and the SEND Reforms. Ruth is passionate and committed to ensuring that children and young people with SEND are supported to reach their full potential.
